Spectral identification of pyroclastic deposits on Mercury with MASCS/MESSENGER data

چکیده
The pyroclastic deposits on Mercury are proof of explosive volcanism that occurred the innermost planet Solar System; usually characterized by a central pit (vent) surrounded spectrally bright and red deposit (facula). were mainly identified analysing images acquired from MDIS onboard MESSENGER mission, which revealed about 200 deposits. In this work, we focus identification applying spectral conditions radiometrically photometrically corrected data MASCS spectrometer spacecraft. addition, to further optimize quality used spectra, dataset was limited additional filters observing detector temperature. We selected 8 deposits, out 25 recognized IAU, as training field, area using four parameters, i.e. reflectance slopes. defined range variability parameters able distinguish Average Terrain, filtered set conditions. As result, 52 previously 16 new potential candidates across portion Mercury's surface observed MASCS. method also exposed extended areas such High-Reflectance Red Plains (HRP) in Asparangi Planitia, Borealis floor Rembrandt crater, addition Intermediate Terrains (IT) (IP). Nathair Facula, Agwo Abeeso Facula an unnamed facula termed “Facula 5” show redder UV slope than most possibly associated with fine regolith and/or minor amount Fe or C-phases minerals composing facula. Among areas, 6 strongly suggest nature connected could be considered

Global inventory and characterization of pyroclastic deposits on Mercury: New insights into pyroclastic activity from MESSENGER orbital data
We present new observations of pyroclastic deposits on the surface of Mercury from data acquired during the orbital phase of the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) mission. The global analysis of pyroclastic deposits brings the total number of such identified features from 40 to 51. Some 90% of pyroclastic deposits are found within impact craters. The loca...
متن کاملBasaltic Pyroclastic Deposits on Earth and Mars: Constraints for Robotic Exploration of Martian Pyroclastic Deposits
Introduction: Basaltic pyroclastic rocks are uncommon on Earth because most mafic magmas are too volatile-poor to drive explosive eruptions [3-4]. However, basaltic pyroclastic deposits maybe much more common on Mars than on Earth [4-7] because Mars’ lower gravity and thinner atmosphere permit explosive eruptions from magmas with lower volatile contents. Though rare, basaltic pyroclastic rock o...
متن کاملThe global distribution of pyroclastic deposits on Mercury: The view from MESSENGER flybys 1–3
We present a global survey of candidate pyroclastic deposits on Mercury, derived from images obtained during MESSENGER flybys 1–3 that provided near-global coverage at resolutions between 5 and 0.5 km/pixel. Thirty-five deposits were identified and characterized and are located principally on the floors of craters, along rims of craters, and along the edge of the Caloris basin. Deposits are com...
متن کاملRemote Sensing of Lunar Pyroclastic Mantling Deposits
Mantling deposits on the Moon are considered to be pyroclastic units emplaced on the lunar surface as a result of explosive fire fountaining. These pyroclastic units are characterized as having low albedos, having smooth fine-textured surfaces, and consisting in part of homogeneous, Febearing volcanic glass and partially crystallized spheres. Mantling units exhibit low returns on depolarized 3....
متن کاملCompositional analyses of lunar pyroclastic deposits
The 5-band Clementine UVVIS data at 100 m/pixel were used to examine the compositions of 75 large and small lunar pyroclastic deposits (LPDs), and these were compared to representative lunar maria and highlands deposits. Results show that the albedo, spectral color, and inferred composition of most LPDs are similar to those of low-titanium, mature lunar maria. These LPDs may have consisted larg...
